Plan 2: the Quebec Act of 1774
- the British debated for years before deciding what to do with the colony of Quebec
- there was trouble in English colonies to the south of Quebec. The colonies were growing tired of British rule & the American Revolution was about to occur
- gave territory in Ohio west of the Appalachians to Quebec, returning most of what had been New France
- allowed seigneurs to continue to own seigneuries and take rent
- permitted the French to keep their language, customs and religion (Roman Catholic)
- allowed the church to collect tithes
- established two kinds of law - French civil law which the colonists were familiar with and English criminal law with a trial by jury (like we have today)
- named a British governor and council to rule the colony but allowed Roman Catholics to be appointed to the governing council (this was forbidden in Britain)
